Supporting Music at Ely Cathedral

How you can help

Worship is at the very heart of cathedral life. These great churches were built to reflect the glory of God with the desire that the acts of worship offered within them should lift our hearts and minds towards heaven. Music has always been the heartbeat of that worship.

Ely Cathedral stands high among those places where music does indeed lift the soul towards heaven in surroundings that are sublime.

Ely Cathedral Choir has been part of the English choral tradition since the mid-sixteenth century, and in terms of its monastic heritage, can be traced back considerably further, to the time of King Canute. We want to build upon this extraordinary tradition and preserve it for future generations. This, of course, costs money - currently 350,000 a year.

Ely's world famous male voice choir is made up of 22 boy choristers and 6 Lay Clerks (gentleman singers) who are supplemented by extra men on occasion.

Services are sung daily and there are many extra concerts & recitals involving the Cathedral Choir.

In more recent times, our choral tradition has been enhanced with the addition of the Ely Cathedral Girls' Choir, the Ely Imps for children aged 7 - to 13, and the Ely Cathedral Octagon Singers, a popular voluntary choir for singers aged 16 years upwards.

We are enormously grateful to all those who through their gifts help to ensure the continuing success of the Choir and of our music tradition. Will you join them? Here are some of the ways you can help:

We are fortunate that a number of our choristers are sponsored but we are seeking further funded Choristerships. The annual cost of each Choristership is 9,500.

Cover the costs of maintaining the Cathedral's magnificent Harrison & Harrison organ. Tuning and maintaining this and the Steinway piano costs 10,000 per year.

For 1,000 per year you can ask for a particular day's music to be named for a person or a cause.

You can join the Order of St. Etheldreda. £500 a year brings membership of this organisation which supports the music and fabric of the Cathedral.
